Teflono HydroForce

High-performance PTFE marine grease with superior water displacement and corrosion protection

HydroForce is formulated for marine deck machinery, winches, and exposed outdoor equipment. Its calcium sulfonate complex thickener provides inherent water resistance and corrosion protection, enhanced by hydrophobic fumed silica for superior moisture barrier performance. The PTFE micro-particles create a durable, water-displacing lubrication film that resists washout even under direct saltwater spray. A high-performance aminic/phenolic dual antioxidant package delivers excellent oxidation stability for extended service intervals. Enhanced with zinc-based anti-corrosion agents for maximum protection against galvanic and atmospheric corrosion.

Process Steps

1

Base Oil Blending

Combine PAO 6 synthetic oil and Group III mineral oil in a clean stainless steel vessel. Heat to 80°C. The PAO/mineral blend provides a wide operating temperature range (-30°C to 180°C) while maintaining good additive solubility.

80°C 10 minutes
2

Calcium Sulfonate Complex Formation

Add overbased calcium sulfonate slowly while stirring at 600 RPM. Add calcium carbonate to promote complex formation. The calcium sulfonate complex provides the drop point exceeding 310°C.

80–90°C 15 minutes
3

Conversion Reaction

Heat to conversion temperature. The amorphous calcium carbonate crystallizes into calcite, strengthening the thickener matrix. Add small amount of water (50ml) to promote crystallization. Hold until all water evaporates and structure is established.

160–180°C 45 minutes
4

PTFE & Silica Dispersion

Cool to 120°C. Add PTFE micro-powder gradually while increasing mixer speed to 1200 RPM. Once dispersed, add hydrophobic fumed silica — this critical addition elevates water resistance from excellent to superior by creating a hydrophobic barrier throughout the grease matrix.

110–120°C 20 minutes
5

Dual Antioxidant & Additive Package

At 100°C, add diphenylamine and hindered phenol antioxidants (dual system provides excellent oxidation stability through synergistic radical scavenging). Then add ZDDP, lanolin water displacer, emulsifier, and anti-foam. Finally, add PIB tackifier.

90–100°C 20 minutes
6

Milling & Water Spray Test

Mill through a three-roll mill twice (0.03mm, 0.01mm gaps). Perform water spray test: apply grease to a steel plate, spray with saltwater for 10 minutes — grease should not wash off. Also perform 24-hour immersion test.

50–60°C 25 minutes
7

QC & Packaging

Test penetration, drop point (>310°C), water washout (<0.5%), salt spray corrosion (>750 hrs), four-ball wear (<0.45 mm), and oxidation stability. Package in sealed tubes or cartridges suitable for marine environments.

Room temp 30 minutes

Required Equipment

  • Stainless steel reactor vessel with reflux condenser
  • Variable speed agitator (100–1200 RPM)
  • Thermocouple and temperature controller
  • Three-roll mill
  • Water spray test apparatus
  • Salt spray chamber (for QC)
  • Sealed packaging equipment for marine-grade containers
  • PPE: Safety glasses, chemical-resistant gloves

Safety Notes

  • Water addition to hot oil at 170°C will cause vigorous boiling — add slowly and stand back
  • Calcium sulfonate may cause skin irritation with prolonged contact
  • ZDDP contains zinc — avoid inhalation and prolonged skin contact
  • PIB tackifier is very sticky — clean tools immediately after use
  • Ensure adequate ventilation during the water boil-off stage
  • Final product is non-hazardous and safe for general marine use

Quality Control Checks

  • Cone penetration: 265–295 dmm (ASTM D217)
  • Drop point: >310°C (ASTM D2265)
  • Water washout @79°C: <0.5% (ASTM D1264)
  • Four-ball wear scar: <0.45 mm (ASTM D2266)
  • Salt spray corrosion: >750 hrs (ASTM B117)
  • Emcor rust test: 0-0 rating (IP 220)
  • Oxidation stability: >300 min at 100°C (ASTM D942)
  • Visual: Blue-tinted, smooth, tacky grease with no water separation
