Teflono HydroForce

High-performance PTFE marine grease with superior water displacement and corrosion protection

HydroForce is formulated for marine deck machinery, winches, and exposed outdoor equipment. Its calcium sulfonate complex thickener provides inherent water resistance and corrosion protection. The PTFE micro-particles create a durable, water-displacing lubrication film that resists washout even under direct saltwater spray. Enhanced with zinc-based anti-corrosion agents for maximum protection against galvanic and atmospheric corrosion.

Process Steps

1

Base Oil & Thickener Preparation

Heat Group III mineral oil to 80°C. Add overbased calcium sulfonate slowly while stirring at 600 RPM. The calcium sulfonate will begin to form a complex structure as it interacts with the base oil.

80°C 15 minutes
2

Conversion Reaction

Add calcium carbonate to the mixture and continue heating. The conversion of amorphous calcium carbonate to calcite crystals strengthens the thickener matrix. Monitor consistency - it should thicken noticeably.

150-160°C 45 minutes
3

Water Addition & Cook

Add a small amount of water (50ml) to promote crystallization of the calcium sulfonate complex. The water will boil off during this stage. Continue heating until all water has evaporated and grease structure is established.

170-180°C 30 minutes
4

PTFE Dispersion

Cool to 120°C. Add PTFE micro-powder gradually while increasing mixer speed to 1200 RPM. Ensure uniform dispersion throughout the grease matrix.

120°C 20 minutes
5

Additive Package & Tackifier

At 100°C, add ZDDP, lanolin water displacer, anti-oxidant, emulsifier, and anti-foam agent. Finally, add PIB tackifier - it will significantly increase the stringiness and adhesion of the grease.

90-100°C 20 minutes
6

Milling & Water Spray Test

Mill through a three-roll mill twice (0.03mm, 0.01mm gaps). Then perform a water spray test on a sample: apply grease to a steel plate, spray with saltwater for 5 minutes - grease should not wash off.

50-60°C 25 minutes
7

QC & Packaging

Test penetration, drop point, water washout (<1%), and salt spray corrosion (>500 hrs). Package in sealed tubes or cartridges suitable for marine environments.

Room temp 30 minutes

Required Equipment

  • Stainless steel reactor vessel with reflux condenser
  • Variable speed agitator (100-1200 RPM)
  • Thermocouple and temperature controller
  • Three-roll mill
  • Water spray test apparatus
  • Salt spray chamber (for QC)
  • Sealed packaging equipment for marine-grade containers
  • PPE: Safety glasses, chemical-resistant gloves

Safety Notes

  • Water addition to hot oil at 170°C will cause vigorous boiling - add slowly and stand back
  • Calcium sulfonate may cause skin irritation with prolonged contact
  • ZDDP contains zinc - avoid inhalation and prolonged skin contact
  • PIB tackifier is very sticky - clean tools immediately after use
  • Ensure adequate ventilation during the water boil-off stage
  • Final product is non-hazardous and safe for general marine use

Quality Control Checks

  • Cone penetration: 265-295 dmm (ASTM D217)
  • Drop point: >290°C (ASTM D2265)
  • Water washout @79°C: <1% (ASTM D1264)
  • Salt spray corrosion: >500 hrs (ASTM B117)
  • Emcor rust test: 0-0 rating (IP 220)
  • Visual: Blue-tinted, smooth, tacky grease with no water separation
